Modular construction has emerged to be an appealing choice for many commercial contractors and developers, and its demand is constantly on the rise. Characterized by increased efficiency, safety, quality, cost savings, and faster build times, the modular construction concept has attracted a wave of fresh interest and investment in the industry. To help organizations capitalize on this growing trend, RK Mechanical (RK), a Colorado-based specialty contractor, has positioned itself as one of the leading offsite manufacturing partners for its clients with the creation of RK Mission Critical, LLC (RKMC). RK’s earliest prefabrication and modular solutions set industry standards for innovation, durability, and reliability. RK Mission Critical was formed in 2015, for the purpose of providing industry leadership in custom-engineered modular systems for mission critical environments. Our value proposition is to provide turnkey modular product and solutions with optimized efficiency, performance, reliability and cost. “We believe that modular construction is the best way forward for companies that want to improve their business results and stay ahead of the competition,” states John Marrinucci, the vice president and general manager of RK Mission Critical.

He goes on to mention that one of the major issues that RKMC’s clients face is the time required for the completion of a project. Their demand for a faster and more scalable process is adequately met by the company that successfully delivers projects in 12 weeks.
Another pressing problem is the lack of coordination and collaboration among all the stakeholders involved in a particular project, from the design right up to the completion stage. Marrinucci emphasizes, “Our turnkey development and comprehensive pre-construction solutions support concurrent designing and engineering, which help us better understand clients’ needs in terms of their end-product and add more value to the project.” All key participants—be it the design and engineering teams or even maintenance and operations members— are involved in every phase of the project. This, in turn, ensures smooth execution of projects, eliminates communication gaps between the groups, and keeps them updated on all aspects of the model, designs, decision-making, and documentation. Also, RKMC uses Revit and other BIM tools to deliver consistent quality and efficiency to help mitigate project risks.

RKMC’s primary focus is on data, telecommunications, power, and other mission critical vertical markets. The company channels to market include directly serving end-users like hyper-scale companies, data centers, and collocation providers, and serve these users through large OEMs. “We are capable of providing turnkey modular solutions which includes enclosures and multi-discipline systems integration,” adds Marrinucci.

One of the instances exemplifying RKMC’s capabilities is its collaboration with a client that was looking to build a new purpose-built data center due to insufficient cooling and containment in their existing facility. This particular client had a unique footprint and wanted the data center to fit right into their site. While they considered the modular approach due to employee safety issues and was on the lookout for a turnkey solution, they didn’t have enough resources for the project. RKMC stepped in, bringing the executive leaders, engineering and design teams, maintenance personnel under one umbrella, and seamlessly collaborated with them to make changes in real-time and deliver the project on time. Marrinucci mentions that although RKMC has a library of reference designs to rely on, the company always strives to modify it and, if required, build it from ground up as per client requirements.

With a unique blend of construction, manufacturing, and integration along with the use of the Lean Six Sigma principle, RKMC delivers projects faster and with greater value. All activities around a particular project, be it designing, fabricating, manufacturing, and building of modules, are conducted in a standardized manner while ensuring consistent quality throughout.

RKMC has truly established itself as an expert in the field of prefabrication construction, manufacturing modules, assembling, integration and installing them for clients successfully. Striding ahead, RKMC also aims to reduce the lead time for projects and set up more robust prefab operations while increasing the capacity of its facility to roll out over 200 modules, per shift, per year.
